KEY

 

Full black circle = shade plant

Half yellow half black circle = part sun/part shade; probably will do fine in full shade

Yellow circle = likes full sun

Scissors = makes good cut flower to put on table etc

Butterfly = attracts butterflies and hummingbirds

No deer = deer won’t eat it (less of a problem in Palo Alto than in San Carlos)

American Flag = Patriotic J  Actually, means native to Americas

No raindrop = low-water, drought tolerant

GC = groundcover (although I think many of these are GC)

Purple thingie = fragrant

Blue blob = bog plant/wants water (I can plant this one in a certain spot at my place)

Common Name: Bleeding Heart

Pink & white heart-shaped flowers hang from long stems. Excellent shade perennial. You can't beat this one for its low maintenance and reliability!

Athyrium niponicum 'Silver Falls'

Common Name: Painted Fern

The brightest painted fern there is! A stunning fern with lustrous silvery fronds that shimmer with contrasting red veins. Named after a famous Oregon waterfall. Unlike any other Painted Fern, this one intensifies its silvering as the season progresses! Beautiful silver tinted foliage. Not as vigorous and slow to grow but very unique.

Asarum maximum 'Green Panda'

Common Name: Wild Ginger

Stunning black and white blooms to 2'' across below dark green, evergreen, heart shaped, glossy leaves. Among the most beautiful and unusual of ground covers for the shade. A very popular Asarum. Exotic looking but easy to grow.

Asarum europaeum (Hexastylis)

Common Name: Wild Ginger

Our most popular Asarum and most difficult to keep in stock. A choice evergreen with dark green, polished foliage. The small greenish-brown drooping flowers are inconspicuous. Among the most beautiful and unusual of ground covers for the shade. A well deserved Great Plant Pick! [note: this is an “award” given out annually to several plants by the American Horticultural Society or some society like that.]

Arisaema triphyllum

Common Name: Jack-in-the-Pulpit

 

This three-leaved native provides 3 seasons of interest in the shade garden as its early Spring blooming, unique flowers turn into striking heads of red berries in the fall. A very unusual and interesting Arisaema. Easy to grow unique perennial. Also check out Pinellia.

Arachniodes aristata var 'Variegata'

Common Name: East Indian Holly Fern

A strikingly beautiful, variegated, evergreen fern with unusual, glossy, open fronds that have an almost plastic sheen to them. A prominent wide streak of yellow runs down the center of each frond. Very architecturally clean lines. Makes an interesting container subject and a colorful indoor potted plant. Also a nice cut green for floral arrangements.

Common Name: Bugleweed

What a surprise! A delightful pink flowering ajuga with very complimentary bronze purple foliage. From mid to late spring, short spikes of pink flowers stand upright above the low, spreading mat of leaves. An excellent container and accent plant. A dense, spreading ground cover that will grow in shade where the grass won't. Dense foliage chokes out weeds. Very tough, yet beautiful plant for difficult areas.

Actaea pachypoda

Common Name: Dolls Eyes

 

Three seasons of interest on this wonderful native American. Fragrant white soft and fluffy flowers over lush green dissected foliage in Spring. In the Summer, these flowers slowly turn into greenish-yellow berries and in Fall they finish out their growing season as huge, pure white with black dots at each tip resembling the eyes of a doll. Note: Entire plant is toxic. A 'Great Plant Pick'. Also known as Actaea alba

Juncus effusus 'Frenzy'

Common Name: Corkscrew Rush

 

A distinctive yellow stripe runs along the length of its corkscrew-like foliage. As the spiraled blade twists, the stripe seems to appear and disappear. Very different and great for containers. Moisture loving plant with contorted spiraled ringlets of dark green, grass-like evergreen foliage. Great accent for the pond edge. Weird & wonderful. Can be submerged up to an inch or two or just grow in a very moist location.

Hakonechloa macra 'Beni-kaze'

Common Name: Japanese Forest Grass

The Japanese translation is 'Red Wind' which is perfect for this gorgeous forest grass. A flowing graceful green through the summer but in fall when the weather cools the blades take on varying shades of red. A beautiful, easy shade groundcover.

Chasmanthium latifolium

Common Name: Northern Sea Oats

 

This clump-forming, upright, ornamental has flat, drooping seed heads which hang in clusters on slightly arching stems and will flutter when caressed by even the softest of breezes. Seed heads emerge green but turn purplish bronze by late summer. Excellent for dried flower arrangements.

Common Name: Sedge, New Zealand Hairy

 

New! Delicious milk chocolate colored evergreen low growing grass with a mounding habit. Long thin blades curve outward from the center. Similar to Frosted Curls in form but with rich chocolate brown color with pinkish tints.
